Alice J. Carney, 1917 - 2001

Alice Carney was born a coal miner's daughter in Barton, Maryland. She attended Barton school through grade 11 but skipped grade 12 and went to college at the University of Maryland at 16. Had she not been able to attend college through the goodness of a spinster aunt, her life probably would have been very different. Alice graduated with a degree in science and physical education and for about seven years taught science at Westernport's Bruce High School. After marrying, she traveled the world, including occupied Japan, for about ten years as an officer's wife.

Alice loved nature and history, and as such founded the Mount Savage Beautification Committee and served as the historian for the Mount Savage Historical Society. She was instrumental in saving the Cardinal Mooney home in Old Row and pursued the grant to refurbish it. She was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Mount Savage, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and an elected member of the Mount Savage Hall of Honor.

On July 20, 2003 a plaque in her honor in Old Row Park was dedicated in Mt. Savage, Maryland. It reads as follows:

The Alice Carney Herb Garden - In remembrance of Alice Carney for her loving care of the Cardinal Mooney House (the museum) and the herb garden, her nature and Indian lore classes with children, and for sharing her knowledge of Mt. Savage history with all of us in keeping with her efforts to preserve the history of our unique town."
